OSI reproduction project

Post by dave »

Adding to Glitch's initiative, I have sent off a few bare boards to be scanned to Gerber:

505 - CPU / Disk controller
555 - Jungle Board
580 - 8-slot backplane
A15 - I/O expansion board
498 - Extender board
573 - EPROM programmer head-end board
575 - Prototyping head-end board

I am in the process of depopulating some additional boards to send for scanning. No working boards will be harmed in this process:

502 CPU with BASIC in ROM and cassette. Part of my originial C2-4P. Always had to be flexed slightly, or it hangs. Was going to replace all sockets anyway.
540B Video board. Heavily cannibalized by previous owner.
470 Floppy interface - configured as printer interface, heavily cannibalized by previous owner.
527 24K RAM. Empty RAM sockets. Received with broken bus connectors and bypass caps broken off.
535 4116-based 48K RAM board. No RAM installed. Can be modified to use 4164 single-supply chips instead.

Those will be depopulated and sent for scanning one by one, as I have time. The 540B is almost depopulated, just 13 DIPs left.

With the other boards Glitch is working on, and Klyball's excellent hand-recreated reproductions, including versions of the 542B keyboard for original and cherry keys, we should have enough Gerbers to recreate some version of almost any OSI system, except so far no hard disk option.

Dave

I already have the 555 done and boards made

All right then. I'll tell them to hold off on the 555 for now, and will use the funds toward scanning other boards.

The 430b would be an excellent addition. I have one of these but would be reluctant to depopulate it for scanning.

Sounds great. Do you happen to have some docs on this board?

The 540B is fully depopulated, and I'm in the process of doing some cleanup.

By the way folks, the smoke from the ancient flux on the 540 board completely jammed up the filter element on my desolder station. I had to change out brown, rock-hard filters three times for this one board. So if you have any doubts about getting a fume extractor, even a cheap one, when working with these old boards, let this add some weight to the "buy" column. That stuff cannot be good for your lungs.

430B would be an awesome addition to my kit. I can see I will be upgrading my PSU to cope with these.
Are we interested in upgrading these designs before doing boards or just making replicas. Simple additions ie Eprom/PROM selection,4K MON ROM decode,ACIA address, baud rate, CPU CLK etc would make things real tidy for the reader.

I think Klyball has already done some upgrades, such as his 470 card with built-in data separator, RAM, and ROM.

I would be interested in doing some upgrades, but there is value in just having the original boards in Gerber format.

Adding upgrades to scanned boards would require importing the Gerbers to a PCB layout program, and replacing all the component pads with custom footprints to minimize copper change, then doing a schematic capture and linking the schematic components to the PCB components. It may be easier to start fresh from a schematic capture, add the upgrades, then do the layout denovo.

In addition to some of those upgrades, I'd like to add in some video mods for hacks done back in the day. For example, bit addressable graphics, or a programmable character generator.

I understand some PCB capture programs allow you to import a scanned graphic (hi res) of the bare board and go from there. Doing a schematic from scratch for the likes of the 3 CPU board is a lot of work. Yes Grant has done a great job with his boards to date. Perhaps the project needs to gather input from users and info from existing mods to establish a mod plan for some of these boards. I would hate to obtain a new board then turn it into a birds nest. For example I like the idea of the 560Z having 6809 capability and probably need help to add such. Were to start ? Is the board too dense already ? Can share we schematics?

trying to add stuff to existing gerbers is not easy on some boards , when I did the 470 it was easier just to redo the whole thing from schematic and then make it look similar to the original, for example it would be nice to have 12bit ram on the 560z but it's to tight in the proto section so the whole board would need to be redone ,

I thing a good approach might be to make addon boards that attach to a 620 that way they can be for 6xx series or 4xx and 5xx ,

Yes indeed. Hows the 620 coming along Grant,I would be keen on one.Could it be done using resistor packs ?

I hope to offer a 600 style sound and PGraphics board with 48PBUS also at some stage from existing boards I have.
Is anyone interested in a 6809 add on for the 560z. If the proto area is to dense then I would rather a plugin board on the Z80 socket. Maybe add two ROM sockets,RAM and a multi pin jumper that would allow selection of Z80/6809 in situ. Doable ?
