OS-65U Disk Image

Post by bxdanny »

I know there was mention here at one point of someone wanting to try running OS-65U on their system but not having a disk with a good copy of it. So I am posting this image of OS-65U 1.44. It was sent to me a number of years ago by Mark Spankus, and was misnamed as version 1.42. I have determined that it is in fact v1.44, and have renamed the file accordingly, but not altered it in any way. The overall format of the image is the same as 65D 8" images, which is to say raw track images on boundaries of $F00 bytes. I have also determined the following about the track images (tracks 1-76):

- If the fourth byte of the raw track image is $FF, then there is one more byte of filler/noise/whatever, and the actual track data (3584 bytes) begins with the sixth byte of the raw track image.
- If the fourth byte of the raw track image is anything other that $FF, then the actual track data begins with the fifth byte.

I hope this will be useful to someone. I'd like to hear if someone is able to make a real bootable disk from this.

Mike: glad to see it is working for you. I downloaded your "quiet" version, but it still doesn't boot for me. What are we doing different?

BTW, "Access None" means "without the password". You should be able to run CHANGE, PACKER, etc. by including the password on the command line, i.e. RUN"CHANGE","PASS"

Mike, I just noticed that little "cassette" icon on the bottom of your emulator screen graphic. Mine doesn't have that. What version of WinOsi are you using? My copy (same as the one available for download) says "Version 2 alpha" when you click on the "About" option under "Help".

Thanks Danny for the ,"PASS tip. All good now.
To run 65U in winOSI make sure you have BASIC disabled and
[RAM]
RAMTOP=0xBFFF

KERNELTYPE=0
in winOSI config file. Im using 505 emulation with vanilla SYN600.

loading from cassette gives me more coffee time... :lol: Thats a story I will reveal later.

Mike: Those are the settings I'm using, but the image you posted doesn't boot for me. The track number on the drive icon goes back and forth between 0, 1, and 2 a few times, then dies with the track number back at 0 and the green light on. The debugger shows the CPU locked in a tight loop consisting of the single instruction $57B0 BNE $57B0. A=8 (which I'm pretty sure is an error code), X=0, Y=0. S=0xFF, P=0x21.

You mentioned you had worked with Mark in the past trying to get 65U working on WinOSI, are you sure you are not using a modified version that incorporates some or all of that work? Maybe it was more successful than you realized at the time. Are you sure the disk image you posted is the same as the one that is working for you?

I have downloaded that image. OK here.
Are you able to create media from the first 9 tracks? You will need to write a modified tk header as you know.
Thats as far as I want to go at the moment. My 8" drives are in hibernation for the winter.
