Fabricating a 2P badge

Post by nama » Sun Aug 19, 2012 1:20 am

Hi all,
As many of you know I have been restoring a Challenger 2P and the last thing I need to do is get an aluminium badge made and screen printed.
I was wondering if anyone with a 2P could take some simple measurements for me. Basically I need to know three measurements. The height and length of the aluminium badge itself, and lastly the length of the type 'CHALLENGER 2P', from the left edge of the 'C' the the right of the 'P'.

I will be looking for somewhere that can make this badge for me, but if anyone know of a good company please let me know.

While I was drawing the artwork for the 2P, I took the opportunity to also draw up the logo for the 1P too (see attached image). It's interesting to see how the two logos differ. The 1P has much tighter kerning and the word spacing between 'CHALLENGER' and '1P' is massive. The kerning on the 2P version is much looser but looks very amateurish in that the spacing is not even (or visually even). This is most obvious when you look at the letter spacing on either side of the 'G'. I have tried to retain all these aspects in the redrawn artwork.

Much thanks in advance.

Philip

The height is 15.5 mm. The width is 195 mm. The distance from left edge of C to right edge of P is 183 mm. I will follow with interest.

Hi Dave,
I just wanted to double check that 15.5mm height. Is that the height of the lettering, or the height of the aluminium badge?
Seems my artwork isn't fitting properly.

Thanks again

Philip

If the badges are like the badges on my Challenger III (raised metal lettering), the thing to do would be deep-etch zinc. When I worked at ITI Audio, we were using these guys:

The work was acceptable, though we ended up having to reinforce the front panels with aluminum brackets. Our front panels were 19" rack faces, 6U high with a bunch of heavy rotary switches installed, so you're not likely to have sagging issues!

Hi Glitch,
Thanks for the response. The badge I want to make is actually much simpler that that. Basically a strip of thin aluminium with the logo screen printed in black. So it's really not that difficult to fabricate. If I can't find anyone do do it, I may just have a go at making it myself (I used to work at a screen printers as a holiday job earning money for collage) as I think I can do it if I can find the bits. However I have to admit I haven't spent much time recently to look into options.

Thanks again

Philip

Hi Philip,

Sorry for the delay. The 15.5mm height is my measurement for the badge itself (15.5 x 195 mm). However, it does seem a bit short. I will re-check tonight.

I know it wouldn't be authentic, but laser-cutting a black-under-silver piece of plastic would look very nice.

Actually, the C4/8 badges appear to be exactly that. with the lettering silver color and the background black.

Best regards,

Dave

Well, I was quite wrong on that. The 15.5 is for the letter height, and the badge height is 25.5 mm. So sorry about that. I hope that did not cause any problems.

Thanks Dave,
I'll double check my files and set the correct sizes.

Cheers
