I, too would like to hear more about "boothex". What is it, exactly?
Regarding the troubleshooting, it would be helpful to scope some of these signals. You should see be able to see the serial data and clock streams coming in from the floppy drive, when the head is at track 0, for a start. As Bill suggested, it also would not be a bad idea to check continuity of each wire in the ribbon cable. It may be easiest to do that with both ends plugged in, then probe the PCB pads with the power off.
Do you have a digital scope, or an analog one?
